You may or may not have read my article on the 3DConnexion SpacePilot Pro 3D Mouse or SpaceMouse Pro Wireless, if you haven't then I recommend you do to get an idea on what the latest in SpaceMouse hardware has to offer.
But if you want to carry on reading and find out about SpaceMouse (or Mice) then you'll discover the benefits of using this advanced bit of high tech software, and how it will help you as a designer.
In an interview with Paul McCrorey (founder of McCrorey Digital) conducted by 3DBlog Team, we found out why he and so many other designers, engineers and 3D professionals prefer to use a 3D mouse in their work:
"I was familiar with the concept of the 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Pro: The ability to manipulate, translate, rotate and scale at the same time felt like the best way to interact with a 3D part. These features make you feel as though your model is in your hands."
He went onto highlight that when he carries out his design work that it is the first thing he looks for:
"Otherwise, without it, it's like modelling with only one arm in the dark'." So in other words, it's an essential bit of equipment that a top designer recommends you have and feels lost without.
This two handed approach has been taken up by a number of designers who have found that it increases productivity as well improving design accuracy and reduces the risk or symptoms of RSI.
However, like all changes in your workplace it can take a bit of getting used to. McCrorey gives us one bit of advice for this:
"What I always say is that you have to try it. The main thing you need to go through first is the 'adoption phase' and in my experience, this takes a matter of minutes. Once you get through that phase, you will not be able to work without it because your experience is so much more intuitive."
There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to using any of the 3D Mouse products but this is because it is designed for a specific type of user and of course it depends on the user environment too.
Ricky Grove who works at Renderosity quoted that:
"You have to take the time to map all the buttons to the commands that make sense in the programs you use, then you have to figure out the thresholds that feel right to you. It's well worth the effort though, and once you have the rhythm down, you will rue all the hours you spent navigating your 3D applications without it."
Ultimately your SpaceMouse will allow you to have the feeling that you are holding your 3D content in your hand whilst decreasing the overworked capacity of your standard mouse and revolutionising your creativity and efficiency.
