So Autodesk has an updated technology preview for you – The 2D to 3D tool for Inventor.
In their free technology preview you will be able to quickly and easily create 3D models from 2D-designed parts. Once the 2D part is activated as part of the file import, the 2D to 3D Tool will automatically transform your drawing views into orthographic sketches. This will significantly simplify the preparation of 2D views for 3D uses.
However this isn't a recent preview, designers have be utilising the tool within their projects for over a year through its integration with numerous Inventor editions but with the release of Inventor 2015 comes an updated version.
This has allowed Autodesk to use participant's feedback to sort out the frequent issues found within the tool, including:
• 1518266: Customer Error Report: Inventor will crash when loading 2D to 3D add-in
• 1518267: Customer Error Report: Inventor will crash when switching between 2 dwg file after unloading 2D to 3D add-in.
• 1517296: Customer Error Report: Inventor will crash when setting base view of a 2D sketch using the 2D-3D add-in
Although this update has been trialled and tested within Inventor 2015 it is compatible with Inventor R11 to the latest version.
So if you are often compiling your 2D drawings within AutoCAD and wanting to move them into Inventor then this is the tool for you. You can easily join the project and download the plugin from the technology preview site.
Once you have downloaded this tool you will be able to find the plugin under your 3D modelling tab on your Inventor ribbon which should automatically appear every time you open your Inventor software. However if it isn't there then go to your ribbon and click tools to see whether it is selected to routinely load when Inventor opens.
But wait... you haven't heard the best part - it is completely free (that's obviously if you have Inventor).
Your feedback will be essential to develop the project and streamline the way transform your 2D views for 3D use.
