The buzz around BIM has grown over the last decade but there still seems to be an abundance of small businesses that don't think BIM is right for them.
You as a small business may be in the 62% that doesn't think that BIM is the future of project information but with such a high adoption rate of BIM since 2010 (up 39%)¹, it is definitely on course for world domination (bit overstated but it could just do that).
Obviously, this change requires careful planning but do not worry as once you implement BIM then you will be gaining so much. You can set up your adoption of BIM with little or no fuss with any of the Autodesk BIM solutions such as Revit, AutoCAD and Navisworks to name just a few.
In addition to purchasing any of the products mentioned individually you can also buy them as a suite to get all your BIM needs in one – such as Autodesk Building Design Suite, or Autodesk Infrastructure Design which provides you as a smaller firm greater value.
Not only is there a copiousness amount of Autodesk packages that you can purchase but due to the rise of the cloud there are a number of cloud-based tools available to you in various sectors and apps to broaden your initial purchases to allow you to do more and work whilst you are away from the office on a tablet.
But what's more, just in case you're unsure on how to work your software or whether it is right for you in the first place then we have training that is readily available through our training centre on a number of Autodesk software systems – to support you into the transition.
In recent years the UK Government have introduced their initiative of implementing BIM in public sector projects – as I mentioned in my previous post UK Government BIM Strategy – so if you now or the future will be contributing to a public project then it is best to get set up sooner rather than later.
Of course there is no pressure on you to adopt BIM but there are significant benefits that will make you think twice about this approach.
The first massive benefit is obviously winning work. After all this is what makes any company in your industry succeed. In the past you might have been entering a proposal for a job by just providing job costs but now with the ease of programmes such as Revit and BIM360 you are able to let the client know what the end product will look like even before you win the job! This means that they can visual exactly what you have in mind for the project rather than you just explaining to them.
To move on - any prospective client/existing client will always value that you are able to coordinate with them with ease - that's a bonus of using BIM! Working within the cloud allows you to update all thepeople involved with the project on what you have completed/changed. This helps the firms that you are working with understand where you are at within a project and cancels out any room for confusion or disagreement. .
And finally it will make your workflows easier! Even if you only have a few people in your office sometimes you can all become disjointed at what stage you are at in a project but with BIM you will be able to see the changes that have been made to keep up to date.
So as a small firm you needn't see BIM as a daunting prospect as there are numerous tools to guide you into the vast ocean that is BIM and will keep you afloat and winning business for years to come.
