Advance Steel NC Behaviour - What Is The Difference Between Assembly And Single Part Numbers?

We regularly get Advance Steel support cases regarding NC and DXF files where the files don’t match the numbers on the material list. This is a setting that is controlled within every model, not through Management Tools.

The NC settings can be found on the Home tab > Documents

We have 2 categories for the behaviour of NC Files (these settings also apply to DXF Files):
          1. NC based on assembly numbers
          2. NC based on single part numbers

The default template is set to run the NC/DXF based on Assembly numbers.

In the example below, we have a fabricated T made from 3 plates, where the assembly is PL1 which is made up of F1 and F2. When we create the NC files the result is a file for PL1 and F1 but nothing is created for F2.

This is because F2 is the main part of the assembly, therefore it has used the assembly number PL1.

The other effect of “NC based on Assembly numbers” is that any attached parts will have the outline and mark number etched to help the workshop with location and setting out. This can be useful for items such as stringers with welded angle cleats as every corner of every cleat will be etched.

The other option is to run the NC files based on the single part numbers, we have re-run the NC files from our fabricated cleat model and the results can be seen below. You get parts F1 and F2 which would correlate to a material list. When using this option there is no etching done on the plates for attached parts.

Whatever your personal preference this can be set within your template file, so you don’t have to remember to change it on every job.
